Opel CIM module: symptoms of problems with the steering wheel, key and communication

The CIM module is located next to the steering column on several Opel models and participates in the operation of steering wheel controls, turn signals, keys, immobilizers and communication of other modules.

What symptoms are most often noticed?

Intermittent key failure, ignition problems, faulty steering wheel controls, turn signals, siren, or steering angle sensor errors may occur. In some vehicles, the symptoms change with the position of the steering wheel or the temperature.

CIM is not always the only culprit

Similar problems can be caused by a contact lock, key, installation, connectors, a weak battery or other module on the communication network. Diagnostics should cover the entire vehicle and power check, not just one remembered error.

Replacement module coding

If replacement is required, the module must be matched to the vehicle and properly programmed. Certain procedures require vehicle safety data. That is why it is useful to preserve the original module and all available tags.

Information for the initial assessment

Send Opel model, year, engine, error text and a description when the problem occurs. A photo of the diagnostic report is often more useful than the message itself that the CIM is faulty.

An overview of all related interventions is available on the page on the Electronic Module Service.

Do you want a check for your vehicle?
