Start-Stop does not work: the most common reasons why the system does not activate

Start-Stop is only activated when the vehicle meets a number of safety and energy requirements. Therefore, its occasional non-activation does not have to mean a malfunction.

The battery is the most common trace

The system monitors the charge and ability of the battery to restart the engine. If the battery is weakened, undercharged or not properly reported to the vehicle system after replacement, Start-Stop may remain switched off even though the engine starts normally.

Driving conditions may temporarily block the function

Low or high outside temperature, strong cabin heating or cooling, an unheated engine, an open door, an unfastened seat belt, a large steering angle and DPF regeneration can temporarily prevent the engine from shutting down.

When is diagnostics needed?

If a warning appears, the system does not work for a long time even after a long drive, or there are other electrical faults, the battery, battery monitoring sensor, charging and the memorized reasons for the blockage in the control units should be checked.

Do not change the battery by heart

The test should show the actual condition of the battery and charging. Send the vehicle model, year, battery age and a photo of the message on the dashboard to determine the first step.

An overview of all related interventions is available on the page on the Vehicle Diagnostics.
