VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat Gateway module: can it drain the battery?

The gateway is a communication hub between the electronic systems on VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT vehicles. Sometimes the problem is noticed only after installing another multimedia or a new module.

How can the gateway affect the stationary of the vehicle?

If a device does not go into sleep mode, the communication network may remain active and continue to consume power. A gateway can be part of the cause, but consumption is often generated by incompatible multimedia, a door module, a telephone, an alarm or other retrofit device.

Symptoms are not enough without measurement

A low battery in the morning doesn't prove a Gateway malfunction. It is necessary to measure the standby current after the vehicle has been put to sleep, monitor the time of consumption and check which modules remain active by diagnostics.

Compatibility after upgrade

For certain older vehicles, newer multimedia requires the appropriate version of the Gateway or the correct coding of the installed equipment. Before purchasing a part, you should check the number of the existing module, the software and the list of installed systems.

What to send before arrival?

Send the model, year, Gateway label if available, and a list of devices that have recently been installed or replaced. Indicate how long the vehicle can sit before the battery weakens.

An overview of all related interventions is available on the page on the Electronic Module Service.
